In 2004, its founder and executive director, Shaun Spencer, began S.C.A.R.E.D. – Supporting Children with ADHD and their Relatives Every Day – a support group for relatives of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or other disabilities.  Ms. Spencer’s daughter has ADHD.  Between her commitments to S.C.A.R.E.D., volunteer activities with Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) and her expertise in human resources, Ms. Spencer noticed similarities among various groups of youth whose health or circumstances created social barriers for them.  Youth with disabilities, youth at risk of dropping out of high school, and young ex-offenders needed positive social interaction and life skills that programs addressing their educational or career needs lacked.  S.C.A.R.E.D. was redeveloped and has been incorporated as Wibby’s Foundation to fill those gaps.

Named for Ms. Spencer’s great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth “Wibby” Curry Perry, a woman of strength and character who supported every person in her family, church, and community, Wibby’s Foundation serves children ages 12-18 and ex-offenders ages 18-24, with a concentration on minority, low-income and federally designated empowerment zone populations.  We envision youth in the most at-risk populations becoming productive community members through interactive learning opportunities focusing on character building and life skills, community involvement through mentoring and volunteerism, and financial stability.  The organization’s principles, operations, and direct services are based on the “Character First!” and “Financial Peace University” programs.  “Character First!” emphasizes the practical implementation of 49 character qualities to help individuals build character on a daily basis and bring those qualities to their communities, organizations or places of employment.  Created by financial guru and author

Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace University teaches participants how to save,

give, eliminate debt and achieve their financial goals.
